The former commerce minister revealed his intention to run as an independent in the 2024 elections after leaving the party.

In an interview with Neat FM on October 10, 2023, the former MP accused some party members of frustrating Alan and pressing him to quit the party.

Ennin claimed that there might have been a deliberate attempt to discredit Alan within the NPP in the hope that his departure wouldn’t have any lasting effects.

“And the things they did to Alan, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, and all of them, they knew what they were doing, and I think it was a calculated attempt to frustrate the man so he would leave the party, thinking he was no one and his absence wouldn’t influence anything.

But now they see that his absence won’t benefit them at all, but would have the opposite effect… Now that you’ve made a choice without giving it much thought, you want to employ a different strategy to undo it,” he added.

Ennin voiced worry that the NPP’s plan would fail, creating a circumstance that could be divisive during elections.

“If they don’t take care, the next election will be one party versus an independent candidate who will go to a second round.”
