Unverified and new users on X/Twitter must pay a $1 yearly subscription fee.

On October 18, 2023, a statement was posted on the social media platform’s support account informing users of this.

X claims that the program is currently undergoing testing in the Philippines and New Zealand. New accounts will be able to post and communicate with other users throughout the test.

“We’re testing a new program (Not A Bot) in New Zealand and the Philippines starting today,” the statement said.

“In order to post and engage with other postings, newly verified accounts must purchase a $1 yearly membership. There is no impact on current users during this test.

“This new test was created to support our already effective efforts to balance platform accessibility with the tiny fee amount and eliminate spam, platform manipulation, and bot activity. It doesn’t lead to profit.
